Is there an exit tax?
Costa Rica requires a $26.00 per person exit fee when departing. This will be assessed at the airport. Be mindful that I believe they only take cash or colones..so please plan for this the day before you departure.

Do I need to rent a car?
It’s up to you. Shuttles will get you from the airport to the villas. The tours have transportation included. Typically, you would want to rent a 4x4 if you do decide to get a car, depending on how hardcore you plan to drive around. Most rental car companies charge between $20-$50 per day. Most of the critical areas are within walking distance and taxis are not difficult to get. The rental cars will be available in both Liberia and Playa Del Coco. Playa del Coco is a few miles up the road. These rental offices can be found on the internet or call Steve Poston at 1-404-892-2575. Steve works great deals as he operates the villas.

Is it safe in Costa Rica? Is crime a problem?
Crime is mostly experienced in the larger cities. Use common sense with protecting your money and wallet. When outside the villa be sure not to leave valuables in a car. Take them with you or leave them at the villa. Having photocopies of your important documents like Passport, Airline Tickets and Traveler’s Checks makes things a lot easier if you lose them!

What are the contact numbers in case of emergency?
The telephone at Villa Paraiso is 011-506-670-0159 The telephone at Isla Azul is 011-506-670-0182 FYI: AT&T phone cards seem to work best for dialing out of Costa Rica.

How do we sign up for tours?
Upon our arrival at the villas, Doug Sands will make the rounds to each villa and go over the tour and activities that are available. Also, he will answer any questions regarding your stay and will assist us if we have any issues. The villa website has details regarding the main tours and costs.

What about the kids?
My experience regarding bringing children to Costa Rica is based on two observations: primarily, our location is void of any type of American convenience including video games, putt-putt and Walgreen’s. Secondly, this is an adventure type of location! The swimming is safe in the ocean however most activities are designed for children that are adventurous and are at the age where they can challenge themselves. I never contemplated bringing Reese to Costa Rica until he was about 9 or 10. This is not to say that children younger then that age won’t have fun. Just be prepared for the fact that you can’t really let them ‘run on their own’. Quinn and I certainly love the feeling that children bring to our family events. We just want you to be sure you understand that this place is not anything close to Orlando, Florida.
